Team Meeting( Deciding the song)

Image
The song decision didn't take much time as Zara already had one in mind and was rock solid that she wanted to do this one. And she had a lot of creative ideas regarding it so everybody agreed. We decided to shoot a music video in ' Fool ' by Cavetown. This is indie music with some mellow gentle ukulele ballad. The song is about a bit who is stuck in a toxic relationship with someone he loves but they don't love him back. The lyrics ate sad but quite deep so the song lyrics gives us a lot of opportunities to play with the mise-en-scene. The song has a mixed pace with some places being slow and soft while others are fast and loud, this would be perfect for dramatic storytelling.

Shooting Practice #3

Image
This was a shooting practice to make a kind of transition of different location. For this I decided to do in a duo with my friend and media classmate, Myra Suleman. We decided to do a soft, colorful montage like clip. I was the one who acted whereas Myra shot the video. It took us about 20 minutes to plan and decide locations and then we got to shooting. The class time was over so we could not finish the editing today.

Inspiration for Music Video

Image
Before planning our Music videos we watched some other music video to gather ideas and inspiration. For Instance, one of the music video that I have seen is someone like you by Adele which has a continuous tracking shot of the subject where the subject  is slowly walking and  lip syncing the song lyrics. The shot went really well with the song as the song too was slow and soft and the walking pace and camera movement seemed to match the songs rhythm.

Shot ideas from Music Videos

Image
Today in media class we were told to individually look at music videos and collect inspiration and  shot ideas from them.  Flashback shots : The main characters interest interest is crying and screaming on the main character whereas the main character is sitting and singing the song lyrics)- Another Love Close up tracking shot : Close up shot of the subject face while she is walking and singing the lyrics- Someone like you 360 Degree shot : Tracking shot of the subject then moves the camera around to show everything around the subject and then comeback on the subject back- Someone like you Burning candle : Burning candle shown at the start of the video. Candle goes off at the end- A thousand years Mid shot of the subject sitting on a rooftop- Summertime Sadness

Favorite Music Video

Image
Today in class we all watched all the student's favorite music video and take out the different shots and techniques to take inspiration. My favorite music video is 'On the ground' by Rosé. I particularly like this music video of hers because it's narrative based and the way the story is told is exception. There are small connotations such as the artist's original name written on the mirror instead of her artist name and her looking at it longingly which expresses how she misses the way she was before the fame. The mv has some killer tracking shots and the editing pace is set according to the song and the mise en scene if every scene matches the mood of that specific scene for instance when the music slows down she is shown visiting her past and looking at the younger her. Here the exposure is low and she has a soft expression on her face and light coloured clothes. so everything in one scene including the song, the mise en scene the editing represents and showcase...

Representation in Music videos

Image
In the music industry a lot of artists use their fandom and platforms to send important messages to the world. Particularly social issues. Some examples are: This is America by Childish Gambino:   The lyrics and accompanying music video, reflecting the core of the Black Lives Matter movement, confront issues of ongoing systemic racism, including prejudice, racial violence, the ghetto, and law enforcement in the United States, as well as the wider issues of mass shootings and gun violence in the United States. Youth by Shawn Mendes and Khalid: Shawn ad Khalid's music video for youth is finally here- and it features a powerful statement about gun violence and the power young people have to make change. It also encourages the youth to vote. Borders by Mia:  The artist called “MIA” dropped her song called  “Borders”  bring attention to the refugee crisis in America. In many of the scenes such as:    In this picture MIA is singing while in the back pe...

Music Video Theorists

Image
5 Aspect of Music Video by Andrew Goodwin: Thought through beat (seeing what the lyrics mean in your head) Relationship between the song and the visuals Narrative and performance of the song Technical aspect of a music video Star image (protagonist), lots of camera shots making him/ her the centre of attention. Roland Barthes Codes:  Roland Barthes said that texts may be open or closed, he narrowed down the action of the text into five different codes, which are included into any narrative, this includes music narrative videos. The five codes are: The Hermeneutic Code — this is seen as the voice of truth. it is the way the story avoids telling the truth or letting slip of the facts. This is to drop clues throughout the video to help create a sense of mystery, which ultimately makes the video a lot more interesting, and gives it more talkability. The Enigma — This is the empirical voice. this is to give the audience a cliffhanger, it is used to build up tension and keep the au...

Music Video Genres

Image
There are many different genres of music video just like there are many different genres of film.   1. Metal   Within the genre metal we see many close up shots of the artist/band looking into the camera as if they are tying to intimidate the audience. This combines well with the harsh sounding music that the metal genre produces, as well as this we also see many shots of the band playing their musical instruments. Due to the music being very fast, this allows the editing to be fast so that the music video flows. An example of a metal genre music video is Paranoid by Black Sabbath. 2. Indie In the music genre indie, we commonly see slow paced editing due to the fact that the majority of indie songs are slower paced than a lot of others. We also see many close up shots of the artist singing and the performers doing this that relate t...

Shooting practice#2(Planning)

Image
Our media teacher divided us in a group of 4 each and assigned us a song to shoot for. We were supposed to shoot the first 20 seconds of the song Believer by Imagine Dragons. We first planned the shots according to the time. We decided to do 3 different locations and needed two actors. We planned each shot. First was the two actors arguing, the location was a narrow alley. Second and third shot were of only the guy actor. Second shot was in an art class, which was panning shot which later reaches the main character. The second shot was the guy sliding down a wall and the camera pans down too. We auditioned three volunteers who were up for the act and chose one girl: Nur. The other actor that we chose was our group member: Hussan.
