Representation in Music videos

 In the music industry a lot of artists use their fandom and platforms to send important messages to the world. Particularly social issues. Some examples are:

  • This is America by Childish Gambino:  The lyrics and accompanying music video, reflecting the core of the Black Lives Matter movement, confront issues of ongoing systemic racism, including prejudice, racial violence, the ghetto, and law enforcement in the United States, as well as the wider issues of mass shootings and gun violence in the United States.

  • Youth by Shawn Mendes and Khalid: Shawn ad Khalid's music video for youth is finally here- and it features a powerful statement about gun violence and the power young people have to make change. It also encourages the youth to vote.

  • Borders by Mia: The artist called “MIA” dropped her song called “Borders” bring attention to the refugee crisis in America. In many of the scenes such as:  In this picture MIA is singing while in the back people are climbing over the Mexican-American border. In many shots of the video you can clearly see the faces of the refuges as it was important to her that they people were seen as humans.

  • 1-800-273-8255 by Logic:  logic dropped his song “1-800-273-8255”, which is the suicide prevention line. On the day that it was dropped, the hotline received the second- highest daily call volume ever with over 4,573 calls, according to Billboard.
